The word Mysore expands to 'Mahishasurana Ooru', which means the town of Mahishasura. The story goes that the demon Mahishasura was killed by goddess Chamundeshwari atop the Chamundi hill near Mysore. The Wodeyar family ruled Mysore since 14th century except for a short period of 40 years in later 18th century when Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan were the rulers. It is the hub of culture and heritage of Karnataka and is a burgeoning town in terms of technology and trade. This quickly growing city is taking on a new face with each upgrade it makes. Mysore holds its historical features as highly important, yet continues its search for modern day development by expanding in grandeur ways. Lots of palaces and temples strewn around the city speak volumes about the heritage and architecture of the ancient times and the kind of benefaction the city received from its rulers. It is a city of palaces, gardens, and sacred temples. The city is famous for its silk and is also a thriving sandalwood and incense centre. Mysore apart from the world famous Mysore Palace, is known for the festivities that occur during the Dussera Festival. This is the time when the city sees the maximum number of visitors. Mysore is known for its distinct culture in not just India, but abroad as well. This town has never failed to impress its visitors as it is home to some of the finest tourist sites and the most popular among the tourist attractions in Mysore is the Chamundi hills that house the Goddess Chamundeshwari temple. Mysore is also well known for its yoga centres like Ashtanga yoga which originated here. There are many Ashtanga yoga centres in Mysore. Places to see:

During the month of October and November, for ten days the Dussehra festival is celebrated and the city is at its colorful best with music and dance, Sports, Literary competitions, fairs and exhibitions all over. All this culminates in the Dussehra procession and a torchlight parade on the tenth day.

The Mysore Palace:

The Mysore Palace is one of the largest of its kind in India. The Golden Royal Elephant Throne, the Durbar Hall, the Kalyana Mantap and the Gallery are the main attractions here. Built in 1912 in the Indo Saracenic style, the Mysore Palace exudes a grandeur that is unmatched.

The Jaganmohan Palace:

The palace is converted to an art gallery which houses paintings that date back to the late 19th century. Paintings in the traditional Mysore Golden leaf style can also been seen here. Paintings of Raja Ravi Verma of Travancore and the Russian Painter Svetoslav Roerich are on display.

Mysore Zoo:

Situated amidst lush green surroundings, the zoo has acquired fame for breeding some rare animals in captivity. The Mysore Zoo was set up by the royal family and houses some rare and exotic birds & animals.

Brindavan Garden:

The Brindavan Gardens is a garden located in the state of Karnataka in India. It lies adjoining the Krishnarajasagara dam which is built across the river Kaveri. t is one of the most beautifully laid out terrace gardens in India.

The Chamundeshwari Temple:

The Chamundeshwari Temple is one of the noted Hindu places of worship and is situated atop the Chamundi Hill.

Mysore is connected with most of the metros like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Chennai through regular trains.

Road:

The state highway that connects the two cities could provide a pleasant ride through rustic country side. Mysore is located 139 Kms. to the south west of Bangalore.

Air:

Mysore Airport, which is nearly 12 kilometers from the city. One stop connecting flights from Mysore to Other key cities like Chennai, Goa, Mumbai, New Delhi and Pune.
